Olympic Medal Snow Boarder Torah Bright flips over Shaun White… Summer wedding in Salt Lake Planned.

February 19th, 2010

Absolutely amazing how these things happen.  Look in the photos attached to this blog.  aptbright

It appears as if Australian “Olympic Gold Medal” snowboarder Torah Bright is flipping over Shaun White.  She is planning on getting hitched this summer in Salt Lake City but not to Shaun’O.  Too bad though, wouldn’t it be funny to see them name their son “Bright White” ?  Just think of this kids school house conversations: Hey ‘Bright’ whats your dad do? Uh, he’s an Olympic Gold Medal winner with his very own half pipe and line of clothing: The White Collection.  Whoa Dude, and what about that hot looking mom of yours?  Oh, she’s packin’ her own hardware. She stole it from the American Ladies back in 2010. Vancouver I think it was..

Too bad Religon is gonna stand in the way of wedding bells for this ‘Dream Team.’  Ms. Bright is LDS and Shaun’O is Southern Californian.. not much in common off the pipe they both know how to smoke.. half pipe that is..

Sorry, this crazy idea had to be put down.. just call it skiers revenge.

How Many for Dinner???

January 22nd, 2010

Ever wonder how many people are gonna show up for Dinner? Well if its a Super Bowl Party, plan lots of extra and the left overs will usually keep. The Pro-Player stadium sat 75,129 last time the Pig Skin Party was held in Miami ~ while the Orange Bowl Stadium officially recorded 80,187 for Super Bowl X  and last year’s number was 70,774 in Tampa.

Let’s Compare. According to Wiki: The “Un-Official number is 175,000 who showed up last year in Daytona to see Roush Racing’s ~ Matt Kenseth win the Big One while www.travelinbc.com is estimating 2.3 million attendees for the Winter Olympics plus another 29,000 in Media, Support Staff and Athletes.  The Tokyo Marathon averages 30,000 runners and The Harbin Ice Festival comes in over 5 million ~ of course, it’s China!

Deep in Northwest Winter Sport

Deep in Northwest Winter Sport

Another week or so and the shortest calendar month of the year arrives!  Horoscope signs: Aquarius followed by Pisces. I’ve got two daughters born under the sign of water. Funny thing, I can’t ever remember them once telling me they were bored. Looking on the Know2Go calendar I fully see why. Just for funzy’s I clicked on the “Date” bar found on the home page then selected February 1st from the calendar ~ over 460 events listed. WOW! On further search, here’s some of what’s going on: The Harbin International Ice Festival in China (fabulous),  Nascar’s Daytona 500 “Superbowl” of Racing (start your engines), And speaking of Super Bowl ~ Location search “Miami” for that one. The Pro Am Bowling Tourney @ The Taj Mahal of Bowling Pins in Reno, There’s a Runners Marathon happening over in Tokyo (hey watch those elbows). On the business side of the calendar there’s ~ The Mobile World Congress in Barcelona (hello, ma’ bell?) and The Grand Daddy of all Business Trip’s ~ The Winter Olympics is happening up in Vancouver (Ice Cream anybody?).  And if none of this stuff interests you, there is one big holiday in February: Valentine’s Day on Sunday the 14th. Recommend you call for dinner reservations now and if ever get the chance you should see the hardware that flies in Aspen on that weekend… Cheers!

It’s Not About The Money - Who you kidding?

November 15th, 2009

In a recent blog article on ESPN ( sports.espn.go.com/rpm/nascar/news/story?id=4548687 ) Michael Waltrip talks about Danika Patrick joining NASCAR and says her interests are not about the money. Come On Michael! Your kidding yourself. Your a Champion at Nascar and you deserve tremendous respect, but I think you’ve been hit, not by a tire iron but by the driver who welds a curling iron. Admit it Michael, she’s stunningly beautiful and you were mesmerized. Good thing they gotta put on a racing suits and helmets or there would be real trouble on the track.

You better hope you can't see her in the rear view mirror..

You better hope you can't see her in the rear view mirror..

Michael, people don’t go to college for the money they make in school, its all about the money to be made with diploma in hand. Granted, she sat with you and never talked about money - that’s because she already knows there’s no money to be had in Nationwide Racing. She needs experience and your organization. Well if it’s all about the racing and not the money let’s just see how long she hangs around in the series. For that matter, why not send her down to the local Kart track.. that’s all about racing!

It’s not about the money… yeah, any more than movie theaters - are not about good buttered popcorn.

Allow me say what I have said previously, Danika is good for NASCAR, she’s great for racing, and with some oval track experience and a good organization behind her, I think she can win (frequently). But to say that she’s not in it for the money… is just plain goofy.

Combining The PGA and LPGA

November 15th, 2009

If you consider the benefits.. in logistics and global exposure this makes PERFECT sense. If you imagine the day when we watch young Ms Woods and Ms Mickelson dueling it out on the LPGA, while their respective brothers Charlie Axel and Evan chase each other over 72 holes on the PGA… during the same venue on the same weekend - this makes GOLF sense.  If your a event sponsor this makes DOLLARS and CENTS. And if you could imagine the dinner / dance evenings at the Club House - it makes perfect CLUB Membership sense too?  On that note: Just too bad Annika has retired..

Here’s one golf fan who will vote for this. I can’t see the short comings.. save for an in-climate weather nightmare.  Any chance we could see a couple test events in 2010? Boys, I think the ladies could use some good ol’ chivalry about now..

Sunrise Liftoff

Here’s a quick look forward at a couple upcoming events you might not want to miss. If you are really - really into colors you will be amazed at the Albuquerque Balloon Festival. Held October 3rd - this is one of largest attractions in the world for hot air vessels. Most are inflated at day break but there’s plenty to do and the early wake up is worth it. The sky is alive with brilliant colors and the sounds of hot gas burners at they lift off.

The young ladies will be gathered down in Ocala early in October for the US Women’s Mid Amateur Golf Tourney.  Held this year at the Golden Hills Golf and Turf Club.

Dallas will host this year’s Texas State Fair as Jackson Mississippi will be hosting theirs the same weekend in October. The Phantom of the Opera is still going on at Her Majesty’s Theatre in London and Kansas City will be hosting the Nascar Kansas 400.

September Events

August 21st, 2009

Have a look at the Features for September -  just cause the kids are back in school doesn’t mean the summer events are all over. There is some really great sporting events still happening.  In golf, the Walker Cup and The Tour Championship, which is the only two trophy event. First there’s the event trophy last year won by Camilo Vejagas and then there’s the FEDx Cup

Traffic on the Track

Traffic on the Track

Championship trophy, which is a culmination of points from 3 previous events plus the Coca Cola Tour Championship. Last year’s winner Vijay Sing took home the trophy and $10 million dollars. The auto racing action is still going on very strong with 4 big events in September. The F1 Monaco race produces some of the fastest lap times of the year. The Oval at Dover provides excellent race coverage from every grand stand seat. You sit close enough to feel the heat and high enough to see all corners of the track. The Indy Car race in Japan is where Danika won last year and there’s going to be lots of action as she tries to defend her trophy and title this year. There’s also an F1 race in Singapore that also provides great viewing. For some good eats there is the Buffalo, New York Wing Fest. Buffalo is where the wings, celery and blue cheese thing popular at Hooters restaurants was first created. And a personal favorite, the 86th running of the Columbus Ohio Clam Bake. Hosted by the Chamber of Commerce and an excellent event for networking  or treating your favorite customers. Two very different yet very interesting events is The World Fencing Championships in Antalya, Turkey (where I happen to be sitting while writing this) and the Red Bull Diving Championships being held in Switzerland on the southern end of Lake Lucerne.  And to top it all off, would you consider the bad boys from Texas, ZZ Top? They were touring with Aerosmith but after Steven Tyler’s recent mishap on stage, the bearded ones will be going it alone the rest of the tour. Excellent seats are still available on Tickets.com

Two weeks til August…

July 16th, 2009

Even though the economy has slowed to a crawl, the summer days of 2009 seem to be flying by. It feels like Mother’s Day and then the Summer Solstice were just celebrated last week.

In the Events Listing business, August traditionally provides a very busy calendar. It’s Rodeo Season, and many US state’s hold their annual state fair. There are plenty of outdoor festivals and air shows, music festivals and comedy productions. There are some very good automobile shows and car races, both championship and amateur golf events. The Los Angeles Convention Center is hosting a very large Coin and Stamp Show and Las Vegas is in full swing with the summer tourist season.

With a stop by on Know2Go – here’s a tip for planning your next event. Begin a search using the red DATE button. Select the month of August and then pick the days you are looking to fill. If you are not sure which day or dates you have free that’s ok too. Poke around a bit and you can really have some fun with it. If you are in a hurry perhaps you want to begin on the home page where you will find the ‘Featured Events’ listing. These are the ‘Top Ten’ events happening around the world during any given month. For example: In August you will find Formula 1 Racing in Belgium, The PGA Golf Championship at Hazeltine and The 69th annual Sturgis Bike Rally held near Black Hills, South Dakota. This is one of the largest motorcycle gatherings (read: party) of the year, held a very short ride from Mount Rushmore with 50,000 leather clad babes and biker dudes expected in attendance.

By the way, if you select ‘Golf’ from the category list you will also find three other big golf events: The US Senior Open,

Global Champions

Global Champions

The US Amateur and the US Women’s Amateur competitions are also held in August. There are Horse Jumping Championships in the Netherlands and “Colorful Colorado” is hosting its annual fair inthe capital city of Pueblo (surprise! - Denver is not the capital). Visit: www.ColoradoStateFair.com and hometown carrier: FrontierAirlines.

There is a Bluegrass Festival just outside Geneva, Switzerland, a pretty big comedy festival in Edinburgh, Scotland, and another up in Boston, Mass. The Oshkosh Air Show held every year in Wisconsin is a huge event attracting over 10,000 aircraft and more than 700,000 visitors. Interestingly, Oshkosh is a short and very nice bike ride from

A Plane Bike

A Plane Bike

Sturgis.

While there are plenty of housing options; including dormitories, private houses, and hotels it is estimated that over 50% of the Oshkosh attendees actually camp out for the week long event. This year’s special guests include the Airbus A380 (largest passenger aircraft) and ‘River Landing Expert’ - Captain “Sully” Sullenberger from US Airways. If you remember it was back in the dead of winter when he safely landed an Airbus A320 in the Hudson River. And for those “Real” airplane buffs with an insatiable ‘Need for Speed’ we suggest you head on over to Budapest for The Red Bull ( www.redbullairrace.com ) Air Races. This is where single seat – custom made airplanes with power packed engines, often painted in Brilliant Reds and Bright Yellows race around pylons at speeds reaching 370 km/h (230mph).

The Ride

The Ride

And then as you near Labor Day weekend and as your summer begins to wind down, you’ll find the 61st Annual Emmy Awards happening in Hollywood on August 29th. The taped event will air September 20 on CBS, perhaps best experienced from your home with a glass of wine and someone special, as you reflect back on a really great month.

Comparatively, some of the year’s best events are held during the month of August. It is a wonderful time for getting outdoors, socializing and enjoying the year’s best weather. Trouble is, even if the $Buck$ were unlimited you couldn’t fit it all in. Although, it sure would be fun trying. With this thought, keep in mind one of the great benefits of Know2Go is that many dates for next year’s events can also be found. So what doesn’t fit your calendar (and budget) this year can be set aside for planning next August. Well, have fun - don’t forget your sun lotion and hope to see ya’ there.

National Hickory Championships

July 15th, 2009

In an earlier blog write-up I had asked if someone could help me find details on a particular golf event which happens every year with old hickory sticks and players sporting early century golf attire. I am now happy to report the event details have been found, and soon to be listed on Know2Go.

But first let me tell you how this happened… some time ago I had written a short emailo a few tee time buddies and past golf instructors, to prompt some golf fodder. It was titled ‘Great Moments in Golf’ and was about the possible over taking of the number one spot in golf - on the Official World Rankings, a position then held by Tiger Woods.  Number two on the list, Phil Mickelson was trailing 8.66 behind TW’s 8.86 points going into the year’s first major and with a strong finish could over take Mr. Woods. Common knowledge at the time, Tiger had just won the Arnie Palmer event at Ball Hill after 8 months off with ACL knee surgery and Mr. Mickelson had two wins going into The Masters.  In the world of golf - this was potentially huge. Well, it seems there is one golf instructor with entirely too much time on his hands. Apparently, he started poking around on Know2Go, and then onto the Blog where he stumbled across my request. June rolls around and he sees an article in Golf World magazine. Kudos to Chris and thanks for your email reply-

The Look of Nostalga...

The Look of Nostalga...

Event overview: Each year during the first week of June at Oakhurst, in White Sulfur Springs, West Virginia (North of Roanoke, but South of the Monongahela National Forest – in B-E-A-U-tiful country), golfers show up to play a round with hickory shafts, early design golf balls and if so inclined, sporting knickers or fours. According to the GW write-up Oakhurst is the oldest course in America, with only nine holes and less than 2,300 yards in length. Also, there are similar events played in Canada, Germany, England and Australia.

The Oakhurst event is listed as an Open, but if you are going you better get your hickory and start practicing. The drivers are small like today’s rescue clubs, the irons unforgiving and the gripes - a bit worn. Randy Jensen of Omaha, NE is the reigning champion with eight titles on record. Perhaps EBay is a good place to start looking if you don’t have an uncle’s attic to search or spare time for garage sales. But if your really serious Randy does operate a golf shop and can help you find equipment.

Whether you desire to attend next years National Hickory Championships or just want to show up at your next golf fund raiser sporting the nostalgic look – take a browse over at www.golfkickers.com they provide Free Catalogs 1-866.758.7444 and a nice selection in many sizes and colors. Help the memory of Payne Stewart and the tradition of golf live on.

Have you a Cart’ee?

July 14th, 2009

Most golfers have heard of Sandies, Barkies and a Woody, but the other day when telling what I thought was a funny golf story (after the fact), my listener replies: “Wow, I’ve never got a Cart’ee before.” For those needing a little help in golf vernacular,

Sandies or SandSave

Sandies or SandSave

Sandies happen when you hit a shot which lands in the sand trap, hit it out and par the hole and you’ve got a ‘Sandie.’ It doesn’t do anything for your score but it is great fodder for the 19th hole. Bang one toward the woods, bounce it off a tree and finish with par and you card a Barkie. An Ace is a hole in one. Sorry to say in more than 20 years of golf - I don’t have one of these… but I did come very – very close. At Elkdale CC in Western, New York. And the best part was my audience. My (wedding) Best Man, his wife and mine were there to witness it. A par 3 hole 167 yards - tee to green. The wind was coming straight at us. Usually seven iron could reach but I decided one more club was the smart play. The six iron got striped and immediately it became evident that I had hit a good ball. It flew high and straight, homing in on that flag pole like a pigeon returning with a message. As it landed we all started to yell. The ball bangs the flag stick and stops, still visible from the tee, we go silent.

Quick: Somebody call the Police! As we approached the green it quickly became obvious that I had been robbed. There sat the ball two inches right and the flag pole was leaning forward – the wind was pulling on the flag. Had the pole been not ‘guarding the cup’ perhaps it would have dropped in. Ok, it wasn’t supposed to happen, my game had been improving lots that year and I knew it was just a matter of time. I was just glad to have my best audience witness that one shot – and potential moment of glory.

Ok, back to the Cart’ee. I’ll set it up like this. Last month I was playing a round in Colorado. Two golfers on the hole in front of me had parked the cart (blue handicap flag) near the green - front right corner. A par 5 hole and I had banged my new Callaway FT 9 (driver) down the left side landing in trouble. Seven iron out of a dry drainage ditch with high grass and my ball comes to rest at the 200 yard marker. I wanted to keep my pace and thinking at best I could carry 180 yards so I decided on 6 iron. Oh yeah, the six gets striped once again - only this time it bounces off the top of their golf cart and comes to rest on the green – as these guys are putting out. I managed to yell a weak ‘FORE’ and walked up to the green with open hand held high in the air, quick to apologize. These guys obviously Coloradoans, held the flag stick with smiles and offered ‘The Play Through.’ With shaky hands I missed the birdie but grabbed par. Now I have been told that is known as a Cart’ee!

Next time, I’ll write about the Eagle Two I got up in Ohio. Until then hit ‘em straight, watch out for my six iron… and please don’t ask me to explain the Woody.
